Girl on a Wire- Gwenda Bond

After a recent pick up from my local library, I came home with this book. Girl on a Wire was quite an easy read but it had an intriguing plot line that kept me interested all the way through. The novel revolves around two families and their ancient rivalry as competitors at the circus, it seems harmless enough to Julieta and her cousin Sam. Nan doesn’t seem to cope, but they remind themselves that she’ll get over it. Working beside the Gracia family turned out easier than they had expected, much too easy in fact. When Julieta begins to fall in love with Remy Gracia they must keep it a secret because someone is out to get them. Julieta finds mysterious objects planted on her costumes before performances which seem to bring her bad luck. With each circus performance, Julieta attempts something death defying, so it seems too easy for history to resurface and for her to fall again...

There are many themes in this book such as romance and superstition. These are all things that Julieta has to figure out for herself and she finds it hard to find the truth when the truth is unbelievable. I enjoyed the insight to the main character’s life and talents at the circus, I began to really be connected to Julieta and her struggles. Another aspect of Girl on a Wire was the mystery that Julieta and Remy had to solve, they had several clues and suspects and there was a sense of urgency since someone would soon die if they didn’t catch the mastermind behind the bad luck charms. This made the novel a gripping read and helped the story to move along quite quickly.

I think that Girl on a Wire is an easy read for ages 12- 14 since there is some romance but no inappropriate behaviour or language and the plot line may not appeal to older audiences. I hope that this review was insightful for you and that you will stick around for more book recommendations on my blog in weeks to come. Thank you for reading this post!
