Words in Deep Blue- Cath Crowley

I was inspired to read this book partially because of the beautiful front cover and partially because I was in need of a cute story about two people falling in love in a bookstore. I loved this book a lot simply because of all of the topics it covered and all of the emotions that the characters felt. This was a beautiful read and made me want to read more books!

Rachel moved away from her best friend and familiar city to a small town by the sea, but that’s where everything fell apart. She used to love swimming, she used to love science and maths and she used to love Henry. Then her brother Cal, drowned in the shallows of the beach and Rachel’s family was torn apart, along with her heart. She failed Year 12 and decided to return to the city where she grew up. She meets her best friend Henry again and gets a job working with him in his family’s bookstore. She refuses to tell anyone about her brother or Year 12 and hates the people she used to love. Had she made a mistake coming back?

Henry missed Rachel so much when she left. He had lost his best friend who he spent endless nights in the bookstore with. The girl who won all the science awards at school and shared his love for books. He sent her letters and she sometimes replied, but after awhile, she stopped sending letters back so eventually, so did Henry. When Rachel returned to town and got the job with Henry in the bookstore, he thought it would be fun to be with his best friend again, but he was wrong. She became bitter and sour and rude to him. He wondered what happened to the beautiful girl she once was. Sometimes, you only know how much you want something once it is gone.

Cath Crowley’s Words in Deep Blue is a love story that switches perspectives between Henry and Rachel as they try and figure out how they feel about each other. The story also covers Rachel dealing with grief and depression, and Henry whose mother wants to sell the bookshop and whose girlfriend thinks he isn’t good enough. The descriptions of the bookshop and the people in it make me want to be there too and really add to the cosy sense of home it offers to Henry and Rachel.

Overall I really enjoyed reading Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley and would
recommend it to lovers of romance and in need of a good book. Thank you for reading this blog post and I hope you will come back for more next week!
