Everything, Everything - Nicola Yoon

Madeline was diagnosed with a rare form of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency when she was a baby. In other words, she is allergic to the world. Unidentifiable triggers cause bouts of sickness so she has stayed in her house for the past seventeen years. When Olly and his family move in next door, Madeline watches from her window, entranced by Olly's freedom and appreciation of the world. When they start messaging online, it doesn't occur to her that she would be given the opportunity to meet him, or that they would fall in love.

You would think that a story from the point of view of someone who cannot ever leave the house would be quite boring. But you would be wrong. Madeline sees the world from a different point of view and she helps the reader see like this too. 'Everything Everything' is a very original novel unlike anything I have read before. The story was told in a variety of ways including emails, drawings, schedules and other miscellaneous scraps of the main character's life which made it more interesting to read. The novel becomes quite deep by touching on issues surrounding physical and mental illnesses including family violence and losing loved ones.

One of my only negative points was how unrealistic the novel seems. I know that SCID is a real disease affecting real people, but the expensive technology and paid staff helping in Madeline's house seem out of place in a single income household. Also the risks that Maddie takes in the name of 'love' despite her 'illness' seem irrational and far too drastic given the repercussions. Also the resolution was quite shallow and predictable and the romance a little soppy but at least it was written in a way that made it entertaining.

Overall, 'Everything, Everything' was a unique novel and cute romance. Displaying individual ideas and entertaining presentation, I genuinely enjoyed reading this novel. If this sounds like a good novel to you, I hope that you give it a try and let me know what you think in the comments below this post. Thanks for reading my blog.
