The Fellowship of the Ring- J.R.R. Tolkien

Inside "The Fellowship of the Ring" , J.R.R. Tolkien has created a whole new world and I love diving into this classic to read about it. I must admit that it is not a novel for everyone and I didn't love every aspect of the story but there's nothing like an classic, fantasy novel.

"When Mr Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton." (Page 21)
Bilbo was regarded as a peculiar character due to his mysterious disappearance and far off adventures of his younger days. Despite this, all the folk of Hobbiton attended the party and were faced with a huge surprise.
"He stepped down and vanished. There was a blinding flash of light, and the guests all blinked. When they opened their eyes Bilbo was nowhere to be seen." (Page 30)
This left Frodo Baggins to inherit Bilbo's home and belongings which included a small gold ring containing more power than Frodo had ever imagined.

The world in which the novel is set is incredibly well developed and complex but Tolkien cannot assume that the reader always knows what he is talking about. There are so many names, characters, places and creatures that I lose track and get a little confused sometimes. At some points there are large chunks of dialogue to give background information and history which can become boring to read. The twenty page prologue which I didn't read was also not necessary. Apart from this, I found "The Fellowship of the Ring" an entertaining novel. There is a clear good and evil within the story and there is a slow mystery unfolding throughout the story. I find something so comforting about stepping into a fantasy world away from reality to read about a brave little hobbit named Frodo and his journey on which he makes friends and foes and learns many things.

If you love classic novels, fantasy or fairytales, you would enjoy "The Fellowship of the Ring". At times it was engaging and gripping but sometimes it was dull and I skipped over pages of poetry and songs. I personally enjoyed the fantasy world but you need time and patience in order to read the whole novel!
