Notes From My Capitvity - Kathy Parks

I hadn't actually heard of this novel before it appeared in my August Once Upon a Book Club Box, but I am definitely glad I read it. It is difficult to put a single genre to it because there was so much variety in the novel: adventure, paranormal, romance, mystery. All of these genres got blended together to create the unique novel that is "Notes From My Captivity".

Adrienne's father was killed by a drunk driver seven years ago. Now she lives with her worried mother, evil step brother and obsessed step father. Adrienne can't help but dislike her stepdad, Dan, because he is trying to take the place of her real father and no one can do that.  He also happens to be fascinated by a mythical family called the Osinovs who supposedly live in the Siberian wilderness. When Adrienne pretends to be interested in Dan's obsession, she gets brought along to an expedition into the Siberian wilderness. Her secret plan is to stack up the evidence against the existence of this magical family and write an article that will bring her fame as a reporter. Once embarked on their adventure, Dan, Adrienne and their Russian guides discover that things are not quite going as planned and Adrienne begins to wonder... maybe the Osinov family does exist...

I feel that almost any reader would enjoy this novel. Since there are so many different genres, there is something for everyone. You may already know that I'm not a fan of soppy romance, but the romance in this novel thankfully didn't consume the plot line and merely enhanced the story. "Notes From My Captivity" had a way of keeping the reader engaged all the way through but it did so in a strange way. The pace of the plot was fast paced and gripping at the start of the novel but then halfway through, the action stopped and not much happened until the ending. In some ways this was effective for developing the connection between the reader and the characters, but it also seemed out of place for the climax to be so peaceful. No matter what happened throughout the story, at least it had a good ending. It wasn't a stroke of genius but at least it was satisfying and realistic.

If you don't know what novel to read next, then I would recommend reading "Notes From My Captivity" by Kathy Parks. It is fast paced and haunting but heartfelt and joyful and therefore it fits into almost any genre. Next month, I will be reading a different novel from Once Upon a Book Club Box. Once Upon a Book Club is a company that sells unique, monthly book boxes internationally which include one book and three to four gifts. The way it works is the gifts come with page numbers on them and once you get up to that page, you open the gift and it brings to life what you have read. I found this really clever and cool to experience. If you are interested in purchasing a Once Upon a Book Club box, head to https://www.onceuponabookclub.com and you can use the code INKPOT10 for 10% off! Thank you for reading my blog post!
