State of Grace - Hilary Badger

This novel was interesting and entertaining to read. It seemed a shame that it felt like almost every aspect of this novel I had read before. The overall idea was so similar to other dystopian novels I have read and even many details were cliche. It seemed like a copy of Divergent with different characters and different settings but the same events and plot line.

A girl lives in an "ideal" world and doesn't doubt it until her mind starts to rebel and she realises that the world is bigger than the wall she is trapped inside. After a series of events, the girl escapes with a guy and they fall in love. Sound familiar? This is exactly what happens in Divergent too! In a nutshell, that is vaguely what happens in "The State of Grace" but here is a more specific blurb.

Although nobody exists beyond the garden where Wren lives, that doesn't matter since she has everything she will ever need. Living in paradise, a  community with freedom and fun, everything is perfect. When she begins seeing strange visions of another world and things that are somehow familiar, doubts enter Wren's head. The only person that can see that is Blaze, but can she trust him? Lies begin to surface and Wren is faced with the choice of remaining ignorant or facing the truth.

This novel was not a bad book. It was good at times, but at the end I couldn't shake its incredible likeness to Divergent (which I must admit is far better than this novel). Apart from that, the idea was clever and the plot was smooth, keeping the reader intrigued all the way through. The characters were quite shallow and their relationships were all quite weak which meant that the reader never felt very connected to the characters. I would recommend "The State of Grace" to people who love dystopian novels and don't mind reading the cliche, unoriginal parts of this novel or people who have never read dystopian novels before.

I know that I contradicted myself many times throughout this review, but I hope that you understand what I mean. I don't like being negative about a book, but I want to give you my honest opinion about what I have read. Thanks for reading this blog post and I hope that you will check out more of my posts.
