The Raven Boys- Maggie Steifvater

The Raven Boys is a novel that seems to be quite popular. I have read countless raving reviews and seen many Instagram posts about it so I put it on hold at my local library to give it a try for myself. I was not going to believe all of these reviews until I had read it for myself. I ploughed my way through The Raven Boys and this is what I encountered...

Every year on St Mark’s Eve, Blue stands in the cold with her clairvoyant mother as she takes down the names of the souls who are to die in the coming year. Blue can never see them, while her mother always can, but this year one soul appears on the corpse road and speaks to Blue.

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve. Either you’re his true love or you killed him”

Blue has always been told that she will cause her true love to die...

The boy that Blue sees is a rich boy from the local private school who she would normally stay away from, but something draws her to this boy named Gansey. She embarks on a mysterious adventure with Gansey and his friends but fails to foresee the dangers to come.

The novel has a fascinating idea and plot behind it, but it failed to grasp my full attention. It was not the sort of book that I got sucked into and I was disappointed by the ending of it since it is the first in a series, I don’t want to have to read through all the books before I got a truly settling ending. The author did a very good job developing each character and the complicated history behind the way each one lived their life. I felt like I could get inside the character’s heads without spending too much time away from the plot of the story.

Overall, I enjoyed reading the Raven Boys and found it an interesting novel. Unfortunately, I found that it lacked suspense and anything that could really draw me into the plot. I have read some of Maggie Steifvater’s books before and haven’t been particularly impressed with them but I feel like her writing style is just not for me. In that case, if the Raven Boys sounds like an interesting book to you, perhaps you should give it a try and let me know what you thought in the comments of this post. Thanks for reading this post!
