The Best Bookshops in Melbourne

I have recently been on some bookshop crawls around the centre and East side of Melbourne and wish to share with you my discoveries. Beneath the hustle and bustle of Melbourne, you can find cosy rooms filled with every book you can imagine and amazing prices on great books if only you know where to look. If you live in or are visiting Melbourne, here are the bookshops with the best atmosphere and the best prices.

Looking for cosy, bookish vibes? These ones are for you:
  1. City Basement Books - 342 Flinders St

If you're not paying attention, you could easily miss the little doorway between the busy shops on Flinders Street but once you find it, it will lead you down a flight of stairs and into book heaven. Book shelves filled and piles on the ground stacked high with second hand books on any topic you can think of. Good prices and an awesome shop.

  1. Paperback Bookshop - 60 Bourke Street

This is a tiny shop crammed with books in shelves going up to the ceiling. Selling brand new books you won't get cheap deals here but you will get the awesome feeling of being surrounded entirely by books.

  1. Yarra Cottage Books - 189 Yarra Street
Out in gorgeous Warrandyte, stroll along the river, grab a bite from the bakery and check out this second hand book shop on the main street. Although mostly non fiction, the array of books is extensive and if you are looking for something specific, Yarra Cottage Books is sure to have it.

  1. Hill of Content - 86 Bourke Street

Located just down the road from the Paperback Bookshop, this is a bigger, more luxurious bookshop several stories high, with red carpet and huge wooden bookshelves. Their prices are far from cheap but it is a lovely place to browse and enjoy.

Looking for the best prices on brand new books? Check these out:

  1. The Book Grocer - Melbourne CBD
You can find these shops on Little Collins Street, Bourke Street, Elizabeth Street, just walk down a street in Melbourne's CBD and you will find one a Book Grocer. At the time when I found them, they were are having a closing down sale, selling all of their books for $7 each. They don't have a great range but if you happen to find something you like and you catch them in a sale, you will have a bargain.

  1. Best Books 4 Less - Frankston Shopping Centre
I stumbled upon this shop accidentally when wandering through the shopping centre but would highly recommend it. Brand new books and recent releases are sold for half the price you would pay at other stores. If you are ever in the Frankston area, it is worth having a look.

  1. Dymocks - 234 Collins Street

This is the biggest Dymocks I have ever been in and is quite impressive. They sell a large range of expensive books and have stores around the world. This specific store has a corner at the back where you can buy slightly damaged or unsold books for cheaper than half the original prices.

There are plenty more book shops which I would love to visit and tell you about one day, but I haven't had the time to see them yet. If you have a favourite bookshop, please comment on this post because I would love to hear about it. Thank you for reading my blog and come back next week for a new post!
